Description
Immediately after the start, one kilometer at 8.5% immediately makes it clear that what is beginning is a climb that should not be underestimated.
The eight kilometers that lead to Plan Lachat are almost totally straight and alternate sections that are decidedly pedaled at 2-3%, with kilometer segments with average gradients of 7-8%.
The fatigue of this stretch exposed to the sun is amply rewarded by the scenery offered by the spectacular side valleys and by the stony majesty of the mountains.
A long series of hairpin bends begins with a peak of 11%. 4 km from the summit, at the Granges du Galibier, a monument commemorates the feat accomplished by Marco Pantani on the 1998 Tour.
The last kilometer, the one that leads from the Galibier tunnel to the 2642 meters of the hill, is the most challenging of the entire ascent, with an average gradient of 9.5%.
